Autism Speaks

One of the largest and most widely known autism advocacy and research-funding organizations in the U.S., maintaining a comprehensive state-by-state Family Resource Guide and funding research into autism causes, treatments, and supports. Worth knowing honestly: autistic people have actively protested Autism Speaks for years over its historically cure- and deficit-focused framing and the lack of autistic people in its own leadership, and this protest movement directly led some autistic self-advocates to found their own organizations in response, most notably the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), listed separately on this site and online at autisticadvocacy.org. We encourage families to also explore ASAN and other neurodiversity-affirming organizations (see our related listings) alongside, or instead of, Autism Speaks, so you can decide for yourself which voices and approaches you want to support.

ASAN led the #StopTheShock campaign that contributed to the FDA's 2020 ban on electric shock devices used on disabled people at the Judge Rotenberg Center, and has advocated successfully against subminimum wage for disabled federal contract workers. Guiding principle: 'Nothing About Us, Without Us.'
